What Affects Your Performance and Success

Many people incorrectly assumed that their performance and success depends on paper qualifications, general intelligence, good looks, and their connection. In fact, most experts believe that the two key determinants of human performance and success are our knowledge and attitude.

As Henry Ford said “If money is your hope for independence you will never have it. The only real security that a man will have in this world is a reserve of knowledge, experience, and ability.”

Effect of Knowledge on Performance and Success

We can all learn skills and be creative. We are all capable of becoming experts in our area of specialisation or excellence. If we make the necessary efforts to study our area of excellence, take action, think about our results, question what we have learned and the actions we have taken, then we are ready to learn even more.  Please let us not blame others for the extent of our knowledge, in particular our family and the educational institutions we attended or even our employers. After all once we clicked 18+, we become master/mistress of our own fate. We must therefore accept responsibility for our own learning and control our life.

Unfortunately, the great majority of people stop learning when they leave school or university. Learning is a process which should continue throughout life. When we stop learning, we stop growing. If we keeping on doing the same thing, we will keep on getting the same result. The great news is that if we make the necessary effort to set key goals for our self-development, business, and private life, then a whole series of better performance and success will be our results. We can read books, blogs and even attend seminar that will impact our performance and success.

Effect of Attitude on Performance and Success

Psychologists define attitudes as a learned tendency to evaluate things in a certain way. This can include evaluation of people, issues, objects or events.

No matter what knowledge or skill we possess, we cannot succeed without the right attitude.  In fact, some researchers believed that attitude accounts for about 80% of our performance and success. When we acquired knowledge and skills, we must backed them with the right attitude for us to be successful. Positive mental attitude means being excited, joy and encouragement to situations we face in life. We should be willing to work, support and help others. Attitude affects our relationship with co-workers, subordinates, employers and even the customers who pays our salaries. A bad attitude is like a flat tire, you can’t get nowhere till you change it.

Your living is determined not so much by what life brings to you but by the attitude you bring to life; not so much by what happens to you as but the way your mind looks at what happens. Khalil Gibran

Unfortunately again, most people still love to indulge in the negative emotions of blame, guilt, fear of failure, fear of rejection, self-pity, anger, self-doubt, hate, etc. These negative attitudes will never give us positive performance and success.

As we set our goals in life, remember that all positive emotions give us energy whiles negative emotions drain us of energy. Therefore, we should continue to learn and apply our knowledge with the relevant positive attitude.
